چکیده
I review recent progress in numerically simulating the formation and evolution of galaxies in hierarchically clustering universes. Special emphasis is given to results based on high-resolution gas dynamical simulations using the N-body hardware integrator GRAPE. Applications address the origin of the spin of disk galaxies, the structure and kinematics of damped Ly-α systems, and the origin of galaxy morphology and of galaxy scaling laws.

The Formation of Galaxies: A Challenge for Supercomputers - A Simple Task for GRAPE?
We present numerical simulations of galaxy formation, one of the most challenging problems in computational astrophysics. The key point in such simulations is the eecient solution of the N{body problem. If the gas of a galaxy is treated by means of smoothed particle hydro-dynamics (Sph), the hydrodynamic equations can be reduced to a form similar to that of the N{body problem. A straightforward...
متن کاملNumerical Simulations of Galaxy Formation
An overview over the current status of modeling galaxies by means of numerical simulations is given. After a short description of how galaxies form in hierarchically clustering scenarios, success and failures of current simulations are demonstrated using three different applications: the morphology of present day galaxies; the appearance of high redshift galaxies; and the nature of the Ly-α for...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum Problem in Cosmological Simulations of Disk Galaxy Formation
We conduct a systematic study of the angular momentum problem in numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation. We investigate the role of numerical resolution using a semi-cosmological setup which combines an efficient use of the number of particles in an isolated halo while preserving the hierarchical build-up of the disk through the merging of clumps. We perform the same simulation varying ...
